Naturalization in Japan
The procedure for becoming Japanese and the acquisition of Japanese nationality are called naturalization. It takes about a year for naturalization to be approved, but if approved, you will be able to obtain a Japanese passport.
It is a naturalization procedure, but not everyone will be accepted if they declare that they want to become Japanese. The law stipulates the conditions for naturalization and the documents and certificates that need to be submitted, so I will explain them in simple terms below.
Naturalization condition 1. Place of residence (address)
The basic condition is that you have a visa (status of residence) approved by the Immigration Bureau and have lived in Japan for at least 5 years until you apply for naturalization. Every year, it is checked whether 80% or more of the 365 days have stayed in Japan. However, you will not be considered to have an address in Japan while you are in Japan on a student visa, for example, you will stay in Japan as an international student (obtaining a student visa) and stay in Japan after graduation. Please note that if you get a job at a company in Japan (obtain a work visa), the period you are studying in Japan will not be the period you are staying in Japan.
Naturalization condition 2. Ability
To apply for naturalization, you must be at least 20 years old and have reached the age of majority under the laws of your home country. As an exception, the age requirement is relaxed for naturalization applications submitted at the same time as the parent.
Naturalization condition 3. Behavior
It is important that there is nothing wrong with the behavior. The point is that we have never been involved in crime and do not bother society. You can also use it to make decisions about traffic violations. Also, paying taxes properly is related to the obligations of the people, so you must submit a tax payment certificate (national tax, inhabitant tax). You will also need a certificate of participation in the Japanese pension system. If you do not have a Japanese pension, you will not be allowed to apply for naturalization. Just like a normal Japanese, it is judged whether or not you can live in society.
Naturalization condition 4. Living
It is a so-called economic power problem. It will be checked whether you can work and live on your own. If you can live in Japan and live a stable life with your spouse’s financial strength, there is no problem. If you are a student, you can also send it to your parents. In the case of marriage, naturalization is not allowed without the fact that they live in love with each other.
In the case of marriage, if you have an address in Japan for more than 3 years and you still have an address in Japan, you can apply for naturalization. In addition, foreigners who are Japanese spouses can apply for naturalization if they have an address in Japan for one year after they have been married for more than three years.
Naturalization condition 5. Country of Citizenship
The foreigner who intends to naturalize must be stateless or have to renounce his or her previous nationality. Japan does not allow dual citizenship.
Naturalization condition 6. Constitutional compliance
Naturalization is not allowed unless the person is in line with the spirit of Japan’s Peace Constitution. It means that no one at risk, such as a terrorist reserve, will be allowed.
Naturalization condition 7. Japanese ability
Generally, Japanese people aged 7 to 8 are required to have the ability to read and write Japanese. Since Japanese elementary school students are in the lower grades of Japanese language ability, it is necessary to understand simple kanji in addition to katakana and hiragana. Basically, you have to be able to have a smooth conversation with the officer in Japanese. In most cases, you will actually be tested in Japanese, so naturalization is not recommended unless you have some confidence in Japanese.
